Because of Title IX: Natalie Winkelfoos

Director of Athletics, Oberlin College

Finish this sentence: “Because of Title IX...”

I have always "run with the boys," while rejecting the phrase "boys will be boys."

How have the athletic and academic opportunities afforded to you because of Title IX impacted your life? Can you imagine your life without them?

I have always identified as an athlete. Without Title IX, I wouldn’t be able to carry that label as strongly as I have (and do). Being an athlete gave me confidence, power, and engraved a gritty nature into my spirit. Excelling on the field and court gave me options for educational settings (Big school? Small school? One sport? Two sports?). Title IX provided me the choice to combine academics with athletics. Athletics has allowed me to see the world, meet new people, and gifted me with mentors, friendships, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Tell us about a woman who championed you in pursuing your goals. How did her influence inspire or affect you and your career?

My mom is the ultimate badass. She raised five children on her own. She relied on her own strength, courage, and resiliency to navigate an uncertain path when my father passed away. My mom is a power-hitter. No matter how crazy of a curveball she’s thrown, she swings her bat. She taught me to put others first. She epitomizes the notion that being brave doesn’t mean you’re not scared, it means you go on even though you are scared. She never asked me to dull myself for anyone or anything. My value isn’t given to me by others’ opinions…I define my value. I carry these lessons with me everyday. She’s the best coach I will ever have and is the strongest woman I have ever met. Because of her, I embrace my badass qualities while pushing myself to be a better person and professional every single day while staying calm in the face of chaos.

How are you continuing to champion the next generation of women and girls in sports, and raise awareness on the importance Title IX?

I am leading with intention, enthusiasm, and consistency. I am right alongside my female staff striving to share our stories and experiences. Together we are inspiring the next generation to find their voices and be champions of their own journeys.

If you could send an empowering tweet to every woman and girl across the country, what would you send?

No one says it better than Beyonce… “Who run the world? GIRLS.”
